IV Sedation

Not laughing gas. Not “relaxation dentistry.” IV sedation means you’re out — no awareness, no anxiety, no memory of the procedure. You close your eyes, and when you open them, the work is done.

What IV sedation actually means.

You won’t be aware of a thing.

IV sedation is medication delivered through a small IV line in your arm. Within seconds, you drift into a deep twilight state. You’re still breathing on your own — your body stays relaxed and your reflexes keep working. But you won’t be aware of anything. You won’t feel anything. And when it’s over, you won’t remember anything.

That’s what makes it different from general anesthesia. General anesthesia shuts everything down — you need a breathing tube and an anesthesiologist. IV sedation is lighter and safer. You breathe on your own the entire time. But from your perspective, the result is the same: you drift off and wake up when it’s done.

Here’s what happens:

You arrive at the office. We place a small IV — one quick pinch, and that’s the last thing you’ll be aware of. The medication takes effect immediately. You drift off into a deep twilight state. Dr. Rus completes your entire treatment plan while you sleep. We monitor your vitals continuously throughout the procedure — oxygen, heart rate, blood pressure, everything. When the work is done, we gently bring you back. Most patients open their eyes and say, “When are you going to start?”

It’s already finished.

Will I feel anything?

No. The sedation eliminates awareness and pain completely. You won’t feel the needle, the drill, or anything else.

Will I remember the procedure?

No. IV sedation produces amnesia. The hours in the chair simply don’t exist in your memory.

Is it safe?

Yes. IV sedation has been used in dentistry for decades. It’s actually safer than general anesthesia because you breathe on your own throughout the procedure. Dr. Rus is IV sedation certified and monitors you with medical-grade equipment the entire time. You’re safer here than you would be white-knuckling it in the chair with your blood pressure through the roof.

What if something goes wrong?

We carry full emergency equipment and reversal medications in the office. Dr. Rus is trained in advanced cardiac life support. Complications are extremely rare, but we prepare for everything.

This is for you if:

You haven’t been to the dentist in years.

Five years. Ten years. Twenty. We don’t count and we don’t ask why. You’re here now. That’s what matters.

You’ve had a bad experience.

A painful procedure. A dentist who didn’t listen. A childhood memory that never went away. We get it. That’s exactly why we do this differently.

You need a lot of work and you don’t want fifteen appointments.

Multiple extractions, implants, crowns, bone grafts — things that would normally take months of visits. We do it in one or two sedation sessions.

You gag, you can’t get numb, or you can’t sit still.

Some people have a strong gag reflex. Some have a hard time getting numb with local anesthetic. Some just can’t tolerate sitting in a dental chair for hours. Sedation solves all of it.

You’re embarrassed about your teeth.

You’ve been hiding your smile, eating on one side, avoiding photos. No one here is going to lecture you or make you feel worse than you already do. We fix teeth. That’s it.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone, and you’re in the right place.

They put it off too. Then they came here.

Fourteen years. That’s how long I went without seeing a dentist. I knew it was bad. Dr. Rus pulled up my X-rays and just said, “We can fix all of this.” No lecture. No look.

Michelle R.

My regular dentist told me I’d need six implants, three specialists, and about a year of appointments. Found Dr. Rus, and he did it all himself in one sedation session. I remember the IV going in. Next thing I know my wife is handing me a smoothie.

David K.

I have a needle phobia. Not the normal kind — the kind where I pass out in the doctor’s office. They didn’t make me feel stupid about it. I woke up and it was done.

James T.

I’m a physician, so I understood the pharmacology. I picked Dr. Rus because his monitoring protocol is thorough and his credentials checked out. But what surprised me was how human the whole experience felt.

Your doctor.
Start to finish.

Dr. Ruslan Maidans — Dr. Rus — has been practicing in Groton since 2016. He earned his Fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry and his Fellowship from the International Dental Implant Association. He trained at the Dawson Academy in full mouth reconstruction and complex restorative cases, and holds IV sedation certification.

That’s the resume. Here’s what actually matters:

Dr. Rus places and restores every implant himself. He doesn’t place the implant and send you to another doctor for the crown. He doesn’t hand you off to a specialist halfway through. You deal with one person from the first scan to the final bite adjustment.

He built this practice for the patients other offices turn away — the ones who haven’t been to a dentist in a decade, the ones who need full mouth reconstruction, the ones who are terrified of the chair. He’s done hundreds of sedation cases. He’s rebuilt mouths that other dentists called hopeless.

When other dentists won’t take your case, they send you here.

He doesn’t lecture. He doesn’t judge. He looks at your X-rays, tells you what needs to happen, and gets it done while you sleep.

Questions we hear every day.

No. IV sedation puts you in a deep twilight state — you’re breathing on your own and your body functions normally. General anesthesia requires a breathing tube and an anesthesiologist. IV sedation is lighter, safer, and you recover faster. But the result is the same from your perspective: you won’t be aware of anything, you won’t feel anything, and you won’t remember anything.

No. Between the IV sedation and local anesthesia, you’ll have zero awareness and zero pain during the procedure.

No. One of the effects of IV sedation is amnesia. Most patients remember the IV being placed, then nothing until they’re in recovery.

Yes. It’s been used in dentistry for decades. You breathe on your own throughout the procedure, which makes it safer than general anesthesia. Dr. Rus is IV sedation certified and monitors your oxygen, heart rate, and blood pressure continuously. We carry full emergency equipment and reversal medications in the office.

Depends on the work being done. A single implant might take an hour. A full mouth rehabilitation can take 4–8 hours. But from your perspective, it feels like minutes — you drift off and wake up when it’s done.

No. That’s most of our patients. We don’t keep track of how long it’s been and we don’t comment on it. You’re here now, and we’ll build a plan to fix everything.

We’re out-of-network with all insurance carriers. You pay at the time of treatment and your insurance reimburses you directly. Our team will help you understand your out-of-network benefits and maximize your reimbursement. Many patients also use HSA or FSA funds, which effectively gives you a 20–35% discount with pre-tax dollars.

Total treatment cost depends on your specific case — implants, restorations, extractions all factor in. We’ll give you an exact quote at your consultation with no surprises and no hidden fees.

No. You can book directly. Many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, but it’s not required.

In most cases, yes. Some complex cases require two sedation sessions — for example, if we need bone grafts to heal before placing implants. Dr. Rus will tell you exactly what to expect at your consultation.

Ready when you are.

No pressure. No judgment. No lectures. Just a conversation about what’s possible.
